Sermon “Locked Out, Locked Down?”

In this powerful Eastertide message, Rev. Ron McDougald explores the familiar story of "Doubting Thomas" — but with a fresh perspective. Thomas wasn't just skeptical; he was brave, faithful, and an everyday follower who missed Jesus' first appearance to the disciples because the doors were locked for fear.

What happens when fear and anxiety cause us to lock ourselves down — shutting out hope, community, and even the presence of the risen Christ? Jesus doesn't stay on the outside. He passes through locked doors, meets Thomas in his doubt, and invites us all to move from fear to faith with the declaration: "My Lord and my God!"

This sermon reminds us that:

  • Thomas was more than his doubts — he was courageous and loyal.
  • Fear can cause us to lock God out of our lives, our hearts, and our circumstances.
  • The risen Jesus breaks through every barrier with peace, forgiveness, and new life.
  • Blessed are those who believe without seeing — yet Christ still meets us in our questions.

Whether you're wrestling with doubt, anxiety, past hurts, or the grind of everyday life, this message offers hope: Christ stands at the door and knocks. Will you let Him in?

Sermon Text: "On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you.'" (John 20:19 NIV)
