What happens when we get ahead of Jesus—or try to take His place?
In this message from Matthew 16:21–28 (with Romans 12:9–21), Rev. Ron McDougald traces a single temptation from the Garden of Eden through Peter’s rebuke of Jesus and into our own lives: the desire to know as much as God, to decide what is best, and to stand in front of the One we are called to follow.
Jesus has just begun to speak plainly about the cross. Peter, fresh from his great confession and the promise of the keys of the kingdom, pulls Him aside: “This shall never happen to You.” Jesus’ response is startling: “Get behind me, Satan… you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Then comes the invitation that still stands: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
Rev. McDougald weaves together:
- The original temptation in Genesis—wanting to be like God
- Peter’s well-intentioned but misplaced attempt to protect Jesus from the cross
- Everyday ways we forget our place: deciding we know better than God what will satisfy us, trying to be someone else’s savior, or simply wandering out of line
- The picture of being bound to Christ like a rope tied to the Leader—conviction as the tug that says “get back in line”
- A rescue-story illustration of how Jesus comes close, sits with us in the dark, and leads us out
The sermon is pastoral, personal, and pointed. It includes family stories, a reminder about wearing a cross versus bearing one, and a closing invitation to examine where we have gotten out of place and to choose again to follow Jesus—even when the path leads through the valley and to the cross.
