Join us at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church as Reverend Ron McDougald preaches “One Big Happy Family…?” from Matthew 18:15-20 (with Romans 13:8-14).
Are we really “one big happy family” in the church—or do we just say it? Pastor Ron challenges the congregation to live out Jesus’ teaching on reconciliation: when someone sins against you, go to them first. Don’t gossip. Don’t wait. Seek them out, listen, and pursue peace.
He illustrates this with the powerful (and hard) story of Billy Neal Moore—a young soldier who committed a terrible crime—and the Christian niece of the man he killed, who chose to forgive and even advocated for his life. The message also draws on the Irish story of “chancing the arm”: taking the first, vulnerable step toward peace even when the other person has locked the door.
Key themes:
- Unity in the body of Christ matters more than numbers, programs, or finances
- Jesus’ model is not primarily church discipline—it’s how we treat one another
- The one who was wronged is called to go first, just as Jesus came to us
- Forgiveness is neither cheap nor easy, but it is commanded
- We are agents of reconciliation because God first reconciled us to Himself through Christ
