Welcome to Week 5 of our Bible study series, "Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist," at Mount Pleasant! Continuing our 10-month deep dive into "A Catechism of Christian Faith and Doctrine for the Global Methodist Church," based on the Nicene Creed. This session explores Questions 8 and 9, affirming Jesus' divine nature and His integral role in creation.

In this video, we examine:

  • Question 8: Is the Son God? Yes, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Scriptures: Luke 10:22, John 1:1, 14, 18; John 10:30, Philippians 2:6, Colossians 1:15, 19; Colossians 2:9, Hebrews 1:1-3.
  • Question 9: What is the Son's role in creation? Through Him all things were made—visible and invisible, in heaven and on earth. Key verses: John 1:3, Colossians 1:16-17, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Hebrews 1:2.
  • Group reflections on "begotten" vs. "made," Jesus' eternal presence with the Father, same nature and fullness of God, and implications for forgiveness, resurrection, and salvation.

Key Themes:

  • Jesus as the Word: Present at creation, sharing God's glory, soul, and authority—challenging early heresies like Arianism.
  • The mind-blowing truth: God in bodily form, forgiving sins only God can forgive, conquering death.
  • Practical study tips: Reading scriptures in context, using concordances, and seeing the thread of Christ throughout the Bible.
  • Lord's Prayer reflection and preview: Next week's Questions 10-12 on why and how the Son became human (pages 29-32).
