Welcome to Week 6 of our Bible study series, "Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist," hosted by Mount Pleasant! Dive into our ongoing 10-month exploration of "A Catechism of Christian Faith and Doctrine for the Global Methodist Church," rooted in the Nicene Creed. This session tackles Questions 10-12, focusing on the mystery of the Incarnation—why and how the Son of God became human, and who Jesus Christ truly is. We include group discussions for deeper insights, whether you're joining in-person or remotely.
In this video, we explore:
- Question 10: Why did the Son of God become human? For us and for our salvation. Scriptures: John 3:17, John 14:6, Acts 4:12, Acts 16:30-31, Romans 3:21-26, Romans 10:9, Titus 3:6-7, Hebrews 7:25.
- Question 11: How did the Son of God become human? Through the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit—fully God and fully human, without sin. Key verses: Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:26-35, Galatians 4:4-5, 1 John 4:2-3.
- Question 12: Who is Jesus Christ? The eternal Son, begotten not made, one with the Father, incarnate for our redemption. Reflections on John 1:14, Philippians 2:5-8, Colossians 2:9, Hebrews 2:14-18.
Key Themes:
- The doctrine of the Incarnation: God becoming flesh to save us, reveal Himself, and intercede—addressing heresies like those in the Nicene Council debates.
- Faith in the mystery: Accepting the "how" (virgin birth) requires the same trust as the "why" (salvation), illustrated by analogies like seeds growing.
- Modern relevance: Responding to billboards claiming "Jesus is not God" with scripture affirming His preexistence, divinity, and humanity.
- Group breakout: Participants discuss salvation from ourselves, the role of witnesses, and why Jesus needed to be "God with skin on."
