In this rich and encouraging session from our ongoing study of Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist, we explore Question 45 from the Global Methodist Church Catechism:
“Are there other means of grace?”
Answer: Yes. Among them are prayer and searching the Scriptures.
Building on our previous discussions of Baptism and Holy Communion, Sherry and the class dive deep into John Wesley’s teaching on the ordinary means of grace — the weekly rhythm of Christian life that helps us grow in holiness and experience God’s transforming grace — as well as extraordinary means such as revivals, covenant services, watch night services, anointing with oil, and more.
You’ll hear heartfelt testimonies about:
- The blessing of serving Communion
- The power of persistent prayer
- Why gathering for worship matters (Hebrews 10:19-25)
- The true meaning and practice of fasting as dependence on God
- The life-changing impact of small group “band meetings”
- How Scripture, prayer, worship, fasting, and Christian community are God’s good gifts to His children
This study reminds us that we do not practice these disciplines to earn salvation, but because we have been saved by grace — and God uses them to make us more like Jesus.
Key Scriptures:
- Matthew 7:7-8
- Luke 11:13, 18:1-5
- John 5:39
- Acts 17:11-12
- 2 Timothy 3:15-17
- James 1:5, 5:13-18
- Hebrews 10:19-25
- 2 Chronicles 20 (Jehoshaphat’s fast & prayer)
Whether you’re new to the Wesleyan tradition or have walked with the Lord for decades, this teaching will challenge and encourage you to embrace the means of grace as pathways to abundant life in Christ.
